Procedure:
Examine your white dandelion.
- What do you notice?
- What’s the easiest way to remove the seeds - blowing them, picking them off?
- Make a prediction - what do you think will happen if you put the dandelion in liquid? Make a separate prediction for every liquid you will try - ice water, hot water, room temperature water, and vegetable oil.
Set up the experiment. Put equal amounts of ice water, hot water, room temperature water, and vegetable oil into the clear cups.
Dip a different dandelion into each liquid so that the seeds are completely submerged. Look at what happens to the dandelion when it’s underwater, then gently pull it out.
- What happened to the dandelion? Did the seeds come off or stay on the stalk?
- Was your prediction correct or did something surprise you?
