On July 20, 1969 Apollo 11 landed on the moon! This incredible achievement was the product of many years of innovative scientific work and immense dedication of so many. Here are some fun facts about the Lunar Landing to share with your curious little explorer!
1. Did you know the dirt on the moon smells like fireworks or ashes? When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon, dirt got onto their suits and they could smell the scent when they returned to the ship.
2. The astronauts practiced for their moon landing by walking sideways on Earth. They would be strapped sideways and have to walk along a wall tilted perpendicular to the floor.
3. Since nobody had ever been to the moon before, scientists were worried that the astronauts could be infected with an unknown type of space germ or infection. When they came back to Earth, they had to be quarantined, or separated from other people, for around 2 weeks.
